Why Does Gout Come and Go?

Gout is a painful inflammation caused by uric acid deposits in the joints. These deposits crystalize and are like needles, causing the patient a great deal of pain, swelling, stiffness in the joints and redness. While there are medications to get rid of gout, it can also be managed through the patient’s diet. In fact, medication and diet can prevent gout and keep it from recurring. But to effectively prevent a gout attack, we must first look at what causes the condition.

Gout is believed to be hereditary in some cases and age and gender can also pay a part. Men tend to develop the condition more than women do and it is found more often in adults than in children. Some medical conditions such as high blood pressure are also believed to contribute to gout. Obviously these causes of gout are more of a challenge to control and prevent gout, but in such cases medication is often found to be very effective.

Other causes of gout may include a diet rich in purines (anchovies, asparagus, dried beans and peas, game meats, herring and liver); being overweight and drinking too much alcohol can all lead to gout. So it stands to reason that if a person developed gout for one of these reasons and the inflammation went away, but they did nothing to change their habits, they are likely to develop it again.

That is why it is important to prevent gout by modifying the diet, ceasing consumption of alcohol and taking medication that will prevent attacks. The medication is typically taken once an attack is over. There are two types of gout medications, Allopurinol, which reduces the body’s production of uric acid. The other medication, Probenhecid, helps the body remove the uric acid in a more effective manner. By helping the body remove the uric acid, it helps to lower the uric acid levels in the blood.

It is wise for anyone who has an attack of gout to see their doctor who will then likely prescribe medication to prevent another attack. It is when people fail to take the medication or make corrections in their diet that gout comes and goes.

Gout can be prevented and most people don’t have to ever have another attack after their first. All it takes is following their doctor’s orders, taking the medication and modifying their diet. With proper care, gout can become nothing more than a memory.
